US Hispanic English words in the OED March 2025 update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>English and Spanish are two of the world\u2019s most widely spoken languages, with a combined total of nearly two billion speakers across the globe. They are also two languages with&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/ora.ox.ac.uk\/objects\/uuid:b92165db-0cc1-4ec5-9c71-84db48012c1f\/files\/mc978a1f5741cbe15c17c77aa0dab5d58\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a long history of contact and mutual influence<\/a>, as evidenced by the large number of words that each has borrowed from the other over the centuries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The influx of Spanish-origin words into American English began in the 19<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century, when the westward expansion of the US, along with the presence of English-speaking settlers in Hispanic areas in the American Southwest, gave rise to so-called \u2018cowboy language\u2019, exemplified by such words as\u00a0<em>vaquero\u00a0<\/em>(and its Anglicized variant\u00a0<em>buckaroo<\/em>),\u00a0<em>bronco, chaps, lasso,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>rodeo<\/em>. This period saw a shift in the patterns of lexical borrowing between the two languages\u2014before the 19<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century, English Hispanicisms were largely borrowed from peninsular Spanish to British English; after the 19<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century, they became mostly American Spanish words absorbed directly into American English.
